We provide a family of control boards for a complete active pen system
Projected Capacitive Touch (PCT) displays rely on transparent conductive film layers of Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), patterned on a glass panel in the form of a matrix of row and columns of elementary capacitors. The CoolPEN system is composed by an active pen device controller board (SMP10x) and a touch display controller board (CPS33x or CPS13x). The active pen generates a frequency tone signal that is coupled through a millimeter tip to the self-capacitance of the elementary capacitors of the PCT matrix. Active pen is about detecting precisely and selectively the coupled frequency tone to the elementary capacitance in the corresponding row and column position where the tip is transmitting. Proper pen signal generation and synchronization, scanning control, sensing the signal from each elementary pixel and processing the resulting projected pen vectors is one of the major function of our CoolPEN™ chipset.
Active pen device
The SMP10x family is dedicated for active pen devices and uses a single chip solution controller board with a proprietary tip force sensor for compact designs of digital pens. We also provide a complete pen turnkey solution for customers who are not willing to design their own pen. The pen IC TD53xx includes a selectable capacitive or resistive tip force sensor interface with a dynamic range of 1024 levels, a frequency tone generator with programmable frequency, an embedded 8-bit controller and a power management unit. The SMP10x family is designed to work with Alkaline and Li battery types.
Single chip solution
The CPS33x family is dedicated for small and medium size touch displays and uses our single chip touch controllers TSC561x. they include the same 8/12-bit analog front end (AFE) and high-voltage drive interfaces as the CTS30x family for touch functionality with an additional interface for selective sensing of the active pen signal. With 80×45 channels they support pen enabled projected capacitive panels ranging between 10” to 14”. They also include embedded 8/32-bit processing units, providing an optimized cost performance ratio for simple touch functionality and basic palm rejection at a report rate of 133Hz.
The CPS13x family is dedicated for medium-to-large and large-to-very large size touch displays. They use a multichip solution built around the TC561x and TC562x controllers with the TS58xx and TD53xx. The TS58xx are our new generation of Analog Front End (AFE) ICs with a new analog chain for selective sensing of the active pen signal and a new Digital Front End (DFE) hardware accelerator for advanced objects recognition. The TD53xx are our new generation of high-voltage drive ICs allowing a proprietary scan of the capacitive matrix and a new analog chain for selective sensing of the active pen signal. With 128×80 channels for TC561x and 256×160 for TC562x they support pen enabled projected capacitive panels ranging between 20” to 27” and 27” to 84” respectively.
TC561x is a 32-bit capacitive touch controller allowing medium touch-pen performance while the TC562x is a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) allowing high performance simultaneous touch-pen features such as scan rates up to 200Hz with multiple fingers capabilities (60+) and advanced objects recognition. They are designed to be used with their companion sense and drive ICs where the sense ICs can be configured in cascaded configuration for extended resolution.
