SoC for AV-type panels

Advanced Silicon has developed a new all-in-one ASIC for AV type color TFT-LCD panels. The ASTLC5506A includes the gate driver, the timing controller and the power management circuits. It also provides all control signals and analog RGB data to pilot the external analog source drivers.

The chip is highly versatile and can be configured to fit to various screens with sizes ranging from 2” to 10.4” and having vertical resolutions from 242 to 290 columns and horizontal resolutions from 480 to 1560 lines. Furthermore the gamma characteristic is selectable from 4 pre-defined correction curves. The controller accepts several timings with PAL or NTSC standards and can provide timings for 8 horizontal resolutions. It supports on screen display function, zoom mode selection as well as contrast, brightness, hue and saturation color adjustments. The exact configuration, received through a serial interface, is stored in internal registers.

The ASTLC5506A has a built-in power management section which generates and controls several voltages for the gate driver (-12.5V/+12.5V), for the liquid crystal common plate and for the external backlight. Also, the chip uses the low-voltage digital supply to produce a regulated power supply for its analog blocks and a higher voltage supply for the internal charge pump. Several parameters of the voltage generators are programmable through the control interface.

The ASTLC5506A is suited to numerous applications such as digital still cameras, video cameras, portable DVDs or MFP displays. By using this chip, the panel architecture is simplified and the bill-of-material reduced since a large number of digital and power functions, previously implemented with several ICs, are now regrouped on a single substrate.
